The Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG) is a federal institution of higher education teaching and research associated to the Ministry of Education. It was created on December 14th, 1960 with the union of five colleges that existed at that time in Goiânia. They were the School of Law, the School of Pharmacy and Dentistry, the School of Engineering, the Conservatory of Music and the School of Medicine. In 1962, the UFG created a new school of study called the School of Philosophy, Human Sciences and Languages.

In 1963, the School of Agronomy and Veterinary was founded in order to attend to the demands from the agricultural and cattle-raising sector. Nowadays they constitute two distinct schools of studies. In 1964, the Institute of Mathematics and Physics began its activities. After the university reform in 1968, the School of Philosophy was divided up into the Institute of Human Sciences and Languages, the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Geophysical Sciences, the Institute of Biological Sciences and the School of Education. The Institute of Arts was also created as a result of the union between the Conservatory and the School of Arts. Later, two more schools of studies were created in the field of Health Studies: the Institute of Tropical Pathology and the School of Nursing and Nutrition.

Once the School of Physical Education was created, UFG then grew to a number of 17 academic divisions. In 1996, the university was restructured administratively and academically which resulted in the separation of three basic institutes (the Institute of Mathematics and Physics, the Institute of Human Sciences and Languages, the Institute of Chemical Studies and Geophysical Sciences) into eight academic divisions: the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, the Institute of Physics, the Institute of Computer Sciences, the School of Communication and Library Science, the School of Human Sciences and Philosophy, the School of Literature and Languages, the Institute of Chemical Studies and the Institute of Social and Environmental Sciences.

The School of Nursing and Nutrition was divided up into two schools of studies: School of Nursing and School of Nutrition, and the Institute of Arts was divided up into the School of Visual Arts and the School of Music. The recent administrative and academic restructuring elevated to a total of 24 the number of academic divisions. It also created the Center for Applied Teaching and Research in Education (Centro de Ensino e Pesquisa Aplicados a Educação - CEPAE), which is responsible for elementary and secondary school education.

Apart from the two campi situated in Goiânia, Campus Samambaia and Campus Colemar Natal e Silva, UFG also has five advanced campi located in Catalão, Jataí, Firminópolis, Cidade de Goiás and Rialma. The main objectives of the campi include the training of highly qualified professionals in different areas of knowledge, the research in various academic fields, the implementation of programs and action projects concerned with the reality of the region and the country, and finally, the creation, promotion and spreading of technological findings and artistic and cultural programs. UFG has gained fields and nowadays plays an important role as far as the economical and social developments of the State are concerned. It has been training highly qualified professionals, as well as producing knowledge and new technology so that it actually reaches society.

The teaching qualification reflects positively in the development of research projects. Today one can find about 1,200 research projects in various areas of knowledge in the university. They are all registered and monitored by the Vice-Presidency of Graduate Studies and Research. About two hundred groups of research are registered in the Directory of Group Research of CNPq in different areas of knowledge, such as Arterial High Blood Pressure, Oral Health, Indian Languages, Environmental Studies, Food and Technology, Plant Improvements, Bovine Enterotoxemia, Gastroenterology, Epidemiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Political Science and Working Class Eating Habits.

Apart from this, some research centers are consolidated in the Institution, such as the Center of Food Technology, Paramagnetic Resonance, Remote Sensoring, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Chagas diseases, among others. UFG supports government and non-government initiatives including private ones through its Extension Program. Such initiatives must above all be based on the principles of a search for alternative measures which aim to improve the living conditions for the population. They must also see the difference between palliative actions destined to attend to critical and emergency situations, and those that seek to reach definite solutions to the problems in society. Therefore the university does not assume full responsibility for solving such problems. The actions undertaken by the Extension Program are grounded on two important objectives:

  • To integrate teaching and research in the search for alternative measures which try to present some solutions to existing problems as well as aspirations to the community.

  • To organize, support and monitor the actions which try to integrate the university and society. This in turn benefits both sides.

Based on the previous guidelines, the Extension Program is developed in order to organize, support and monitor projects concerned with the education of citizens in the areas of political education, public school education, culture, entertainment and recreation, health and environment. Thus it has created institutional mechanisms which enable an advance in the process of integration between the university and different sectors of society. Both the number of projects and the number of people who benefit from them tend to grow every year.
